The history of bent wood manufacturing in the territory of the Czech Republic dates back to 1861 when a bent furniture manufacturing factory was established by Michael Thonet and his sons in Bystřice pod Hostýnem. Chair No. 18, one of the first models manufactured in Bystřice pod Hostýnem, was designed in 1876; it is still a part of the factory’s portfolio. Legendary armchair No. 9, known today as No. 30, was designed in 1903. After World War II, during which the factory was run by a Reich administrator, the company was nationalised due to the post-war changes. Its name was changed to TON (an acronym for the Czech words “Bent Furniture Factory”) in 1953, and other smaller companies were merged with the Bystřice pod Hostýnem factory. In 2011, the company celebrated the 150th anniversary of its establishment. Chair 002, a simpler 3-component version of model No. 14, was unveiled at the ceremony to mark the anniversary.:
