Social scientists define family as a solidarity group of people related by marriage, blood or adoption, who have lived together for a long time and whose adult members are responsible for the upbringing of children. Other definitions describe family by its functions, such as reproductive, social and economic, cultural and educational, social and psychological, and emotional functions.
There is no general definition of family or family members in Czech law. For instance, the Criminal Code defines crime against family and children but contains no definition of family. Certain special laws define family but only for their own specific purposes. The Civil Code valid from 2014 only stipulates that “family, parents and married couples enjoy special legal protection,” without clearly defining family, although the basic principle remains that the main purpose of marriage is to create a family, described as “family community” or “family household.”
