DESCRIPTION
Rzeszów - Teatr im. Wanda Siemaszkowa
Theater Wanda Siemaszkowa is the only professional drama theater operating for 70 years in Rzeszów and the Podkarpackie Voivodeship. It is an artistic institution of fundamental importance for cultural activities in the voivodeship.
It offers residents a number of repertoire proposals. It plays an important role in shaping cultural life in south-eastern Poland: in addition to producing performances, it runs the Szajna Gallery - the only permanent exhibition of prof.'s works in Poland and in the world. Józef Szajna, one of the most important artists of the 20th century, organizes a significant international competition - the Theater Poster Biennale and is the organizer of two nationwide theater reviews - the Rzeszów Theater Meetings (since 2014 in the New Theater Festival formula) and the Rzeszów Carnival Meetings. The Ministry of Culture and Art of the Polish Committee of National Liberation ordered the creation of the Theater on October 7, 1944. Wanda Siemaszkowa, an outstanding Polish actress and director, theater director and teacher, was appointed director of the Rzeszów Land Theater on September 16, 1945. The great actress almost immediately became the pride of Rzeszów. The then 78-year-old Siemaszkowa did not shirk from her work, approaching the creation of the Rzeszów Land Theater with the same enthusiasm with which she created her great creations years ago. During the two years of its directorship, the Rzeszów Land Theater staged as many as 19 premieres. The director herself directed seven performances. In the memories of her colleagues and pupils, she was remembered as a determined, extremely hard-working and committed person, endowed with great charisma and a sense of humor, whose thoughts, wishes and desires were focused on the needs of the theater.
Wanda Siemaszkowa died on August 6, 1947 in Maria Konopnicka's manor house in Żarnowiec.
