DESCRIPTION
Panorama of Racławice
The Rotunda of the Racławice Panorama in Wrocław is one of the few places in the world where, thanks to the use of special painting and technical treatments (lighting, artificial terrain, darkened winding approach), the viewer is transported to another reality and time. Painted from August 1893 to May 1894 by the originator Jan Styka and the famous battle artist Wojciech Kossak together with a team of painters, it commemorates the victorious Battle of Racławice (April 4, 1794) between the insurgent troops led by Tadeusz Kościuszko and the Russian army commanded by General Aleksander Tormasow.
The authors were mainly interested in commemorating national traditions on the hundredth anniversary of the Kościuszko Uprising, and the "heart-warming" Battle of Racławice had extraordinary significance for the nation then in captivity. The panorama was officially opened in Lviv on June 5, 1894. From the very beginning, it enjoyed unwavering interest from viewers and immediately became an attraction attracting crowds of tourists to Lviv. After World War II, in 1946, the painting was sent to Wrocław, but due to twisted decisions of the authorities, it was not shown. After many years of constant efforts to make it available again, after nearly four years of conservation, the ceremonial opening of Panorama took place on June 14, 1985. The famous work of ancient Lviv immediately became the main attraction of Wrocław and is enthusiastically received not only by millions of tourists, but also by distinguished guests who come to Wrocław to see this phenomenon of 19th century mass culture.
The panorama was admired by, among others, Pope John Paul II, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and outstanding personalities from the world of culture and science.
