DESCRIPTION
Maurycy Beniowski 1746 - 1786
Maurycy August Beniowski (born Mateusz Maurycy Michał Franciszek Serafin August Beniowski, Hungarian: Benyovszky Móric, Slovak: Móric Beňovský; born before September 20, 1746 in Vrbov, died May 23, 1786 in Madagascar) - Hungarian and Polish nobleman, participant of the Bar Confederation , exile to Kamchatka, fugitive and traveler, colonizer and "king" of Madagascar, author of the widely read Memoirs.
In the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, he took part in the Bar Confederation, as a result of which he was exiled first to the interior of Russia, then to Siberia and finally to Kamchatka, from which he organized an escape by ship. It traveled from the Arctic Sea and the coast of Alaska, through Japan and Taiwan to China (Macau), from where it reached Europe through the French colonies in the Indian Ocean and the southern coast of Africa. He also visited North America and supported the nascent United States. On behalf of France, he colonized Madagascar, where in 1776 he was proclaimed "great king" (ampansakebe) of the island by the natives and where, probably during one of his subsequent stays, he died in a skirmish with the French.
Maurycy Beniowski was the author of Memoirs, famous at the end of the 18th century, in which he described his participation in the confederation and his daring escape from Kamchatka. He was an aristocrat of Hungarian-Slovak origin, but he also considered himself a Pole, which he emphasized several times in his Memoirs. It is associated with three nations: Slovak, Hungarian and Polish. The hero of many literary works, the most important of which is Juliusz Słowacki's digressive poem Beniowski.
