DESCRIPTION
Gustav Becker
Gustav Eduard Becker was born on May 2, 1819 in Oleśnica (formerly Oels).
He learned the profession of a watchmaker by apprenticeship in many centers of this craft in Europe. Having settled in Świebodzice (formerly Freiburg in Schlesien), he first founded a watchmaker's workshop, and in 1850, a manufactory producing clocks with a weight drive, the so-called Freiburg regulators.
He received a bronze medal for his clock, presented at the Silesian Industrial Exhibition in Wrocław in 1852. This achievement resulted in long-term contracts for the production of official clocks for the Prussian Post Office and railway companies. The support of the government and the King of Prussia, Frederick William IV, enabled the plant to invest in machinery and build new factory buildings. The factory's products, marked with an anchor with the initials GB, thanks to their quality and precision of movement, won medals at subsequent world exhibitions in Berlin, London and Paris.
The company's 25th anniversary in 1875 was associated with the production of the 100,000th clock. In recognition of his achievements in the industrialization of Silesia and his social activities, the German Emperor Wilhelm I decorates Gustav Becker with the Prussian Order of the Crown, 4th class. The production of clocks is constantly growing, the offer is expanding to include new types of clocks (floor clocks, table clocks, alarm clocks) and the factory's products are exported to the markets of Russia, Austria-Hungary, France, England, Sweden, the USA and Australia. A stable political situation in Europe, good financial condition of the factory, positive brand image, far-sighted management, investments and modern production organization, subsequent patents and utility models contribute to the dynamic development of the company. The half-millionth GB clock was produced in 1885 as a gift for Otto von Bismarck on the chancellor's 70th birthday. In addition to the parent company, other clock production plants appear in the city. During Becker's lifetime, the following were established: Endler & Co., Germania, Sœlch & Jaeckel, A. Willmann & Co., W. Sabath, Heinze & Co., Concordia, Kappel & Co., thus Świebodzice became the Silesian city of clocks.
Gustav Becker died on September 14, 1885 and was buried in the family tomb at the cemetery in Świebodzice. He left behind a factory employing 700 employees and the GB brand, which is still recognizable all over the world, and his clocks are the decoration of every significant collection of timepieces.
